Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of the Deaf (HEARD) is an all-volunteer nonprofit civil rights organization that promotes equal access to the justice system for deaf defendants, prisoners, and returning citizens across the nation.

As an all-volunteer, grassroots organization, HEARD works steadfastly to build coalitions; educate and activate the public; and to encourage and facilitate collective leadership within the community. Moreover, we prioritize projects that foreground youth leadership because this creates long-term continuity and sustainability for HEARD; and because we view youth engagement as the key to social justice and community health.

HEARD uses education to empower, advocate, and reform our legal system. We empower the legal community by providing trainings on Deaf Culture and its impact on client communication and representation. HEARD simultaneously empowers the Deaf Community by presenting “Know Your Rights” and “Deaf Wrongful Conviction” trainings; and by hosting bi-monthly meetings where we invite social justice organizations and law enforcement officials to learn from and share with the Deaf Community.

HEARD is a tax exempt organization under Internal Revenue Service Act Section 501(c)(3).  Our Tax Identification Number is 27-5032142
